La Reina

The community of about 670 inhabitants lies 3 kilometers north of the city of San Ramón. In the 1930's the community was the principal city in the mining industry in the Northern Nicaragua but today the mining industry is closed down in the region. It is still possible to enter one of the old mines.

In La Reina you have many possibilities:

-   Let a young local guide take you through the coffee fields while you learn about the life as a coffee farmer and the history of the coffee.

-   Go deep into one of the old gold mines from the time when the Germans searched for gold in the communities around San Ramón.

-   Learn to make necklaces and wristbands out of beans and seeds or buy them from the women who make them.

-   Go out and look for howler monkeys and toucans in the forest.

-    Visit the local guitar maker or buy a painting made by one of the locals.

Cooperative Danilo Gonzalez: The cooperative work with conventional coffee and have 55 members where 22 farmers are females.
